How do stateroom sizes on river cruise ships compare across the industry? For this article, we’re going to look at how staterooms compare among the river cruise companies for ships that travel along the Rhine, Main and Danube. Itineraries sometimes also include the Moselle and Dutch and Belgian Waterways.
We’ve had a series of articles that looked at cabins on individual ships for each river cruise company, which provided a glimpse of how varied some of the staterooms are in terms of size. Now, we’re going to compare them between river cruise companies.

Single Stateroom Size Comparisons
Most river cruise companies have solo cabins on at least some of their ships on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers. The two that do not are Avalon Waterways and Uniworld. That doesn’t mean, however, that single travelers are not welcome. They most certainly are. It would just have to be in one of the accommodations designed for two. Sometimes there is a single supplement, sometimes not. Be sure to check with your travel seller.
A-ROSA, Emerald Waterways, Scenic and Tauck feature solo cabins on all ships that cruise on the Rhine, Main Danube. By size, Emerald Waterways has the smallest at 117 square feet, and Scenic has the largest at 205 square feet. And somewhere in the middle, Tauck’s solo cabins measure 150 square feet and A-ROSA’s are 156 square feet in size.
AmaWaterways has single staterooms on some of its ships, which are 140 square feet. Viking also features 150-square foot cabins on some of its vessels.
Smallest Double Stateroom Size Comparisons
There is an average size, which is about 160 square feet, for double staterooms. However, cabin size ranges from 75 square feet up 172 square feet.
CroisiEurope has the smallest staterooms for a few of its ships. For the MS Mona Lisa, double cabins begin at 75 square feet. Most other ships in CroisiEurope’s fleet have larger accommodations, though — typically, between 118 square feet and 140 square feet.
Smallest staterooms for Uniworld range from 128 square feet to 163 square feet, depending on the ship.
Viking River Cruises‘ double cabins start at 135 square feet. This is consistent for all of its ships on the Rhine, Main and Danube.
Avalon Waterways’ smallest cabin size begins at 172 square feet. That’s the largest in the industry.
For most other companies, the smallest cabin sizes hover around 160 square feet.
Largest Double Stateroom Size Comparisons
There is quite a variation in size for the largest double staterooms, which range in size from 140 square feet to 475 square feet. Even within each company’s fleet, there is a range of sizes, depending on the ship.
The absolute largest staterooms for all ships on the Rhine, Main and Danube are found on Viking River Cruises and Scenic. The Explorer Suite on all of Viking’s Longships are 445 square feet. Scenic has a few ships with the largest staterooms of all river cruise companies, though. The Scenic Amber, Scenic Jasper and Scenic Opal measure 475 square feet.
Overall, the average size for the largest staterooms is 300 square feet. The exception to this is CroisiEurope. Suites are about 140 to 168 square feet for ships in CroisiEurope’s fleet.
Most Common Stateroom Size Comparisons
The most common stateroom size for all ships on the Rhine, Main and Danube is from 75 square feet to 300 square feet. There is a range for all companies, except Avalon Waterways and Emerald Waterways. Most common cabin size for Avalon Waterways is 200 square feet, and it’s 180 square feet for Emerald Waterways.
For the remaining companies, the average is about 175 square feet. CroisiEurope has the smallest cabins, which range in size from 75 square feet to 140 square feet. And Scenic has the largest — 205 square feet to 225 square feet.
Which Company Has the Largest Staterooms?
Overall, Scenic has the largest staterooms in all categories, except the smallest double stateroom. The difference only amounts to about 12 square feet, so it may not be noticeable.
