How do stateroom sizes compare for ships that cruise on the Rhône and Saône rivers in France? Even though there are fewer ships on these waterways, there is still a lot of variation in size. Stateroom sizes range from 118 square feet to 445 square feet. Most river cruise companies have only one or two vessels on the Rhône and Saône.
Let’s take a look at how the stateroom sizes compare across the industry.

Single Stateroom Size Comparisons
Single cabins are available on all ships in this region with the exception of AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways and Viking River Cruises. Staterooms vary in size from 118 square feet to 205 square feet, depending on the river cruise line. CroisiEurope has the smallest cabins, and Uniworld’s solo cabins are close behind at 120 square feet.
The largest solo cabins are found on Scenic. They are a spacious 205 square feet.
A-ROSA and Tauck have single staterooms that are somewhere in between measuring 150 square feet to 156 square feet.
Smallest Double Stateroom Size Comparisons
The size of the smallest double stateroom ranges from 118 square feet to 172 square feet. CroisiEurope has the smallest, and AmaWaterways and Avalon Waterways have the largest.
Viking River Cruises has double staterooms that start at 135 square feet. And for A-ROSA, Scenic, Tauck and Uniworld, smallest double cabins are an average of 150 square feet to 160 square feet in size.
Largest Double Stateroom Size Comparisons
Largest double staterooms range in size from 118 square feet to 445 square feet. CroisiEurope has the smallest cabins. Only one of its vessels on the Rhône and Saône has a suite, which is about 153 square feet. Two of CroisiEurope’s ships do not have suites, so the largest staterooms are the same as the standard ones – 118 square feet.
Viking River Cruises has suites that are 445 square feet, and Uniworld’s suites measure 410 square feet. These are the largest double staterooms available on the Rhône and Saône rivers.
The suites for Avalon Waterways, Scenic and Tauck are at least 300 square feet. And AmaWaterways and Avalon Waterways have double cabins that are about 255 square feet.
Most Common Stateroom Size Comparisons
The most common stateroom size on all ships ranges from 118 square feet to 205 square feet. CroisiEurope has the smallest cabins, and Avalon Waterways, Scenic and Viking River Cruises have the largest.
The majority of Uniworld’s staterooms are 194 square feet, which is still larger than most of the other cruise lines.
And finally, AmaWaterways, A-ROSA and Tauck have their most common stateroom sizes between 156 square feet and 170 square feet.
Which Company Has the Largest Staterooms?
Overall, Uniworld and Viking River Cruises have the largest double staterooms followed by Avalon Waterways and Scenic. Whether or not this matters to you is based on your own preferences. Some travelers don’t seem to value the size of their stateroom as much, since most of their time onboard will be spent outside of it. For others, they like having a lot of space to be able to move around and feel at home in their staterooms.

This excellent comparison was written in 2015. Note that CroisiEurope’s MS Van Gogh was extensively remodelled in 2018, reducing the number of cabins from 78 to 54: 50 doubles, 3 singles, and one for mobility-impaired. This allowed much larger cabins — the doubles are approximately 165 square feet. CroisiEurope’s MS Camargue is also recently remodelled and has a very similar cabin arrangement. These are CroisiEurope’s “premium” ships on the Rhone and Saone.
It’s true that CroisiEurope’s two “standard” ships on the Rhone and Saone, MS Mistral and MS Rhone Princess, have more cabins and thus each cabin is smaller — the 118 square foot size you give above.
